The skin imaging technology has been widely recognized and applied around the world. There have been a large number of books and papers published in the area of dermatologic images. Many academic associations have been established. The academic community has established a relatively complete theoretical system around this area. Dermatologic image based diagnosis has already became an imperative part in clinical practice, medical education, as well as translational medicine in dermatology. Despite the late application of skin imaging technology in China, it has been developed rapidly in recent years. Numerous books and translations in the area have been well received by many dermatologists. The Dermatology Branch of China International Exchange and Promotion Association for Medical and Healthcare (CPAM) set up the Skin Imaging Group in 2017, which has greatly promoted the promotion and application of skin imaging technology.


The recent rapid advance in deep learning has been regarded as a major driver towards artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence applications have been used in a wide range of fields including medical diagnosis and image processing. On one hand, it could potentially create daunting challenges to the traditional medical industries (i.e., dermatology, radiology, and pathology). On the other hand, it brings new opportunities for the overall development of clinical sciences as an integrated element of technological innovation. Since 2017, a number of papers reporting the applications of AI in the dermatology field have been published in top journals such as Nature and JID. Nevertheless, there are still many technical bottlenecks in the clinical applications of AI. Given that, the involvement of medical institutions, medical experts, academic organizations, companies, and third-party operators are still required to promote the development of this field. Research and collaboration organization focusing on this area is in an urgent need. 


Built on top of the Skin Imaging Group of the Dermatology Branch of CPAM, we have founded the Huaxia Skin Image and Artificial Intelligence Cooperation (HSIAIC) and expect to invite more domestic experts in this field to join. The focus of the HSIAIC include: (1) to publish consensuses and guidelines, to conduct relevant conferences and communication events, to perform clinical research and basic study in terms of skin non-invasive imaging diagnostic technology, to develop new skin imaging equipment and a big data management system, to promote the application of block chain technology in smart healthcare, to develop artificial intelligence systems based on skin imaging resources, to regulate the application of artificial intelligence in the fields of dermatology medical treatment, education, and scientific research, to promote the development of remote dermatology, and to establish the relationship and communication with relevant international organizations.


With the support and approval from CPAM, the Huaxia Skin Image and Artificial Intelligence Cooperation has been set up to promote the development of this field. By improving the overall level of Chinese physicians in this field and integrating with the world organizations, we are committed to enhance our influence in this field globally.
